The State of the Youth Climate Movement in Africa

Climate change presents an existential threat with disproportionate impacts on Africa due to the continent’s geography and underlying socio-economic conditions. Acknowledging the vulnerable yet dynamic role and initiatives—through climate movements—led by the continent’s predominantly young population, the African Youth Climate Ecosystem Mapping Project was initiated to help understand, empirically, the efforts of the youth climate movement in climate action. This project employed a mixed methods research design approach, to provide a panoramic view of youth-led climate initiatives, including identifying key actors, their activities, impacts, and the challenges they face to inform strategies for bolstering youth engagement in climate action.
