Are you a passionate storyteller ready to drive climate action? The Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO) is seeking a Communications Manager to lead our outreach, amplify youth voices, and share impactful climate solutions across Africa.
The Communications Manager will lead the development and execution of GAYO’s communication strategy, ensuring that our message reaches a wide audience. The role will involve managing our communications platforms, creating content, and working with various stakeholders to amplify GAYO’s impact. The successful candidate will be responsible for driving GAYO’s visibility, engaging with media, and ensuring effective internal and external communications.
Who we are
GAYO is a youth-led gender-balanced Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), actively delivering advocacy and solution-oriented projects for environmental sustainability and community development. Founded in 2014, GAYO is dedicated to raising awareness, educating, and building the capacity of youth, as well as different stakeholders to combat the socio-ecological injustices driving the ongoing global poly crisis spanning from climate, environment, health, economy, food, and water. GAYO’s work focuses on reducing the threats to humans and nature which include but are not limited to the effects of climate change, disasters caused by natural hazards, and societal inequalities. As a result, GAYO’s interventions intentionally target the vulnerable in society; children, youth, and women. To achieve its objective, GAYO works with various institutions and multiple levels of governance (local, national, regional, and global) to implement sustainable agriculture, circular economy, and renewable energy activism interventions that provide green jobs and better environmental conditions for all.
Terms and Conditions
- Contract duration: 2 years (renewable based on performance)

Key Responsibilities
Communication Strategy & Content Creation
- Develop and execute GAYO’s comprehensive communication strategy, ensuring alignment with the organization’s mission, vision, and objectives.
- Oversee the creation and distribution of high-quality newsletters, blogs, press releases, op-eds, multimedia, and social media content tailored to diverse audiences.
- Drive the strategic development and continuous optimization of GAYO’s website and other external communication channels.
- Spearhead storytelling initiatives to showcase GAYO’s work in climate justice, youth leadership, and environmental sustainability.
- Ensure all content adheres to GAYO’s brand guidelines, maintains inclusivity, and reflects cultural sensitivity.
- Manage and coordinate external communication consultants, such as website designers, illustrators, and content creators, to maintain brand consistency and quality.
Public Relations & Media Management
- Build and maintain strong relationships with media outlets, journalists, influencers, and key opinion leaders to amplify GAYO’s voice.
- Develop and implement PR campaigns to secure consistent, impactful media coverage at regional, national, and global levels.
- Act as GAYO’s spokesperson when necessary, representing the organization in public forums and media interactions.
- Monitor media trends to proactively position GAYO as a thought leader in climate action and youth leadership.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Collaborate with program teams to identify and craft compelling success stories that highlight GAYO’s impact on donors, partners, and broader audiences.
- Support the Executive Director and leadership team with high-quality communication materials, including stakeholder reports, presentations, and correspondence.
- Foster and sustain partnerships with journalists, media houses, and influencers to amplify GAYO’s advocacy messages and campaigns.
Internal Communications
- Develop and implement effective internal communication processes to ensure staff are informed and aligned with organizational goals and updates.
- Manage internal knowledge-sharing platforms to promote collaboration, transparency, and team engagement.
- Provide guidance and training to team members on best practices for communication to ensure consistent messaging across all levels of the organization.
Monitoring, Evaluation & Reporting
- Track and analyze the performance of communication initiatives using data-driven insights to refine strategies and enhance impact.
- Prepare periodic reports on communication outcomes for the leadership team, providing recommendations for continuous improvement.
Qualification & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication, Journalism, or a related field (Master’s degree is preferred).
- At least 5 years of experience in communications, public relations, or media, preferably in the nonprofit or
environmental sector. - Strong leadership and team management skills. eg managing a diverse team of consultants across multiple
geographies to achieve results. - Strong understanding of climate change and sustainability issues, especially in the African context.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; proficiency in other languages is an advantage.
- Experience with social media management, digital content creation, website management, and links with
media houses. - Proven ability to develop and execute communication strategies and campaigns.
- Ability to work independently and in a team, and with strong coordination skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to engage with diverse stakeholders.
- Demonstrated high proficiency in English (reading, writing, and speaking). Working knowledge of French is an asset.
